Dr Kali Prasad Sinha: a tribute

A prominent academician of the North-East, Prof Kali Prasad Sinha died on June 2 at 5.10 pm at Divyashram, East Kachudharam near Silchar. Prof Sinha was born on January 3, 1937 in a small village called East Kachudharam, Silchar. Well-known all over India and abroad for his sterling contributions to Philosophy, Indology and linguistics, he has more than 30 books published reputed publishers of India. KP Sinha was an exponent of Bishnupriya Manipuri Linguistics. His contribution to Linguistics, Socio-linguistic studies and literature concretised the foundation of Bishnupriya Manipuri language and literature.

He was a student of world famous Linguistic Prof. Suniti Kumar Chatterjee. He did his Ph.D on The Bishnupriya Manipuri Language studies from Jadavpur University and D Litt from Bardhawan University, West Bengal. He started his career as a lecturer in Cachar College, Silchar and subsequently joined as a Reader in the Department of Sanskrit, Gauhati University. Thereafter he joined Tripura University as a Professor and ultimately worked in Assam University, Silchar as a Professor and a Dean. He was a bachelor and devoted his whole life to research. He had a huge personal library, mainly on Philosophy and Indology.

He is credited with writing a complete series of books on Indian Philosophy in Assamese language, which, however, are yet to be published. He established a centre of studies, Divyashram, at East Kachudharam, Silchar.

In his death, the entire Bishnupriya Manipuri community has lost a devoted academician, a social reformer and a visionary. May the Almighty grant eternal peace to his departed soul.

    I know Dr. Kali Prasad Sinha. He was born in West Kachudaram
    and not in East Kachudaram as stated . This small mistake need to be corrected. . Indeed he was a brilliant Sanskrit  Scholar . His services to the soceity in the North East and specially to the Bishnupriya population is inexpressible .When he was a student, he had  knowledge in Sanskrit and Culture MORE ENOUGH than anybody else, .We are proud of him.

    It is excellent, prior to your tribute another article posted at this site in regard to his most important publication "THE TERM  BISHNUPRIYA MANIPURI"  on the basis of which Honourable Supreme Court has given the verdict in favour our Community. I have conveyed my heart felt theank for that publication. One of his great achievement you have omitted is "ETIMOLOGICAL DICTIONARY" which was second of  its kinnd in India..  First publication was by Dr. Sukumar Sen. We are making effort for publication another dictionary.which was completed by Late Dr. K. P. Sinha but could not be published due to certain constraint.

Bishnupriya Manipuri Development Council: Few Pertinent Questions (Part I)

By Rebati Mohan Sinha On last 25th March 2010 there was an announcement in the floor of the House that the Government of Assam has agreed on principle to form three separate Social Economic Development Councils for Bishnupriya Manipuri, Nath Yugi and Maimal. And now the Cabinet Committee has given its nod. It will be placed in the House (not yet placed) and once it is passed, then a Ministerial Committee would consult the stake holders i.e. these three communities, regarding their aspirations and would send its recommendation accordingly to the Central Government for further action within the next two months.
