The article was one of the earliest pieces available in the Internet on Bishnupriya Manipuri. Today the original article is no more in the web world; however it is available here in this blog. Special Correspondent Silchar, Jan 6: The well known Bishnupriya Manipuri litterateur and a doyen of the community, Dr. Kali Prasad Sinha, was fondly remembered by his admirers on his 81st birth anniversary organized by Dr. Kali Prasad Memorial Divyashram Sanskriti Kendra, West Kachudaram, 5 km from here, last Tuesday. SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT Silchar, Jan 1: The annual conference of Nikhil Bishnupriya Manipuri Students’ Union (NBMSU) and Bishnupriya Manipuri Ganasangram Parishad (BMGSP) which was held recently in Dr. Kaliprasad Memorial Divyashram Sanskriti Kendra, West Kachudaram, 30 km from here, took up for discussion a number of issues. Controversy between the Meiteis and the Bishnupriyas: There has been a great controversy between the Bishnupriyas and the on the use of the nomenclature 'Bishnupriya Manipuri' to identify the Bishnupriyas and their language. According to the Meiteis they are the 'real Manipuris' inhabiting the land of Manipur from centuries before Christ, while the Bishnupriyas are the descendants of some Bengalese who entered the land only a few centuries back. Accordingly, the Meiteis call the Bishnupriyas (Mayang's, i.e., 'foreigners' or 'westerners' and hold that the Bishnupriyas should not use the term 'Manipuri' either before or after the term 'Bishnupriya' to identify themselves and their language.
