Bishnupriya Manipuri remembers Shahid Rajbabu Singha

By Rebati Mohan Sinha

The 77th martyr day of Shahid Rajbabu Singha was recently observed with the unveiling of Shahid’s statue at the village Masughat, Cachar, Assam on March 14 in a two-day long function.

More Photos slideshow

The program was intended for the upcoming youths to draw inspiration from his life. On March 13, an open house was arranged for the discussion on some of the burning issues confronting the Bishnupriya Manipuri society. Where people from the audience could ask questions pertaining to issues related to the society and distinguished people seated on the dais answering them. People present there had appreciated the new form of discussion.

On March 14th the statue of Shahid Rajbabu Singha was unveiled by Ex.President of Nikhil Bishnupriya Manipuri Mahasabha, Surendra Kumar Sinha in the presence of Manoranjan Sinha, Ex. President of NBMM, Rebati Mohan Sinha, Working President of NBMM, Chandrakanta Sinha, Retd IRS, Working President of NBMM, Uday Sinha, Secretary General of NBMM and other dignitaries. In the afternoon, people had deliberations on the life of Shahid Rajbabu; and in the evening there was a cultural program followed by a short drama on Shahid`s life.

A Brief History of Shahid Rajbabu Singha

Shahid Rajbabu Singha was born in the year 1905 in a very poor family who migrated to Masughat in 1914-15. His schooling started in Masughat primary school in the year 1916. He later passed his Matriculation (in first division) from Calcutta University in 1930; but could not continue further study in college because of poverty.

He started his social work by establishing ‘Balak Samiti’ in the Masughat village. The Samiti’s main slogan was to character building of village students and road building.

Later on he became the ardent admirer of the newspaper ‘Jagoran’ published in Murarichand college in Sylhet (now in Bangladesh) by group of students like Mahendra Kumar Sinha, Phalguni Sinha, Krishna Kumar Debbarma etc. Later on he became the manager of ‘Manipuri’ newspaper published by Samarjit Sinha (who later became a District Judge).

In early 1931, he came in contact with the social worker Phalguni Sinha and started working for the development of Manipuri language and culture; while at the same time he was engaged in a job in SDO`s office, Silchar.

It was a census year; our caste (Meitei/Bishnupriya) was shown as tribal. To fight against the decision, a delegation was to meet the Government authority. Shahid Rajbabu was a party to that; but the Meitei brethren at the eleventh hour back-tracked, for the reason best known to them. Some people believed that he (Rajbabu) had some documents related to Bishnupriya Manipuri from Manipur for further dispatch and he did so; but he could not save himself from the eagle-eyed group of people. He was brutally killed in the late night of 14th March 1933 while he was returning from the office.

Lokei Locus

By Suroshree Sinha, Bangalore

A lot of people take pride now to be called a Bishnupriya Manipuri.
Thanks to the efforts to a lot of people, now we interact, write about our free opinions, and take pride, saying that yes we belong to a community which is growing.

How many of you know the different type of Lokeis which exist among us. Frankly I know very few. The interesting fact is that for every small Lokeis that exist there is a small story behind it. Let’s all come together and let everyone else know about the Lokeis we belong, at the end of the week we would collate how many Lokeis exist.

So go, ask, research, dig up stories that give your Lokei that special name, we would know how many different flowers make this garland called “Bishnupriya Manipuri”.

Opposition prepares for legal battle.
These MLAs have gone against their Party whip

BJP MLAs Abhijit Hazarika, Rumi Nath, Kartik Sena Sinha and Sambhu Singh Mallah
AIUDF MLAs Anowarul Haque and Rashul Haque
AGP MLA Abdul Aziz

Staff Reporter
GUWAHATI, March 27 – The after-shock of the yesterday election to the two Rajya Sabha (RS) seats of the State may result in a political tumult with the Opposition camp preparing for a legal battle, including an election case.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will move the Speaker of the State Assembly to disqualify its four deserter MLAs on Monday. The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) is also submitting a formal request on Monday to the Speaker to disqualify its two deserter MLAs. In case, the Speaker pays no heed to these requests, the parties said that they would go for ‘other options’ to get justice.

The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) is also planning actions in the same line against its deserter MLA Abdul Aziz.

The BJP yesterday drew the attention of the Speaker to the issue of violating party directive by its MLAs Abhijit Hazarika, Rumi Nath, Kartik Sena Sinha and Sambhu Singh Mallah. The party also made an appeal to the Returning Officer of the RS election to declare the votes of these MLAs null and void.

But, said BJP Legislature Party (BJPLP) leader Mission Ranjan Das, the Returning Officer paid no heed to the party appeal. These MLAs with their action of going against the party decision became ineligible to remain members of the State Assembly, Das claimed.

He denied any BJP member issuing any threat to these legislators, when pointed to the allegation of some Ministers that these legislators were under threat, necessitating their shifting to a city hotel and then to be escorted by two Ministers to the voting centre.

AIUDF working president HRA Choudhury asserted that a party whip is binding on the MLAs belonging to a political party. If the inferences drawn from the activities of some members of a political party prove their giving up the original political party, then they invite disqualification as members of a legislature.

In the present case, AIUDF MLAs Anowarul Haque and Rashul Haque invited such disqualification. In case the Speaker refuses to disqualify them or does not take any action on the AIUDF appeal, the party will move the High Court, said Choudhury.

There was a flagrant violation of the election codes yesterday during the RS election. The AIUDF is thinking in the line of taking appropriate steps like approaching the Election Commission with a complaint of violation of the election code by the Congress yesterday, and the court if the situation so demands, he said.

AGP president Chandra Mohan Patowary said that his party would take up the issue of its deserter MLA Abdul Aziz with the Speaker after completing the party’s constitutional provisions. Aziz has gone against the party decision and whip to support Opposition candidate Jayanta Baruah. The AGP is also having discussion on the prospect of an election case, said Patowary.

Meanwhile, workers and supporters of the BJP and the AIUDF have started protest agitations against their deserter MLAs in various parts of the State and at places effigies of these MLAs have also been burnt by the workers of the two parties.

Controversy looms over Bishnupriya Manipuri Development Council

Guwahati, Mar 25 (PTI) The Assam government's decision to form development councils for three communities ahead of the Rajya Sabha polls has sparked off a controversy.

State minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today announced in the state assembly that the government had decided to form three development councils for Nathjyogi, Bishnupriya Manipuri and the Maimal (Muslim fishermen) communities.

Taking exception to the announcement a day before the Rajya Sabha election, Leader of the Opposition and President of Asom Gana Parishad Chandra Mohan Patowary said this was tantamount to violation of election code of conduct.

The opposition parties, which have put a common candidate, Jayanta Baruah, will approach the Election Commission on the matter, he said.

Reacting to the opposition charges, the ruling Congress said nothing wrong has been done.

"We will like them (Opposition) to approach the EC," Nilomoni Sen Deka, Assam PCC general secretary said.

An Appeal for census of Bishnupriya Manipuri: Mahasabha

It is known to all that the Government of India conducts the ten yearly General Census of the population of India. The census of India will determine various factors like numbers of people speaking different languages, castes, communities, religions, mother tongues of people, education and literacy, marital status, economic conditions, numbers of male and females besides the total number of population. So the preservation of identities of the indigenous people, their languages and culture would largely depend on this census.

As regards our community Bishnupriya Manipuri, it is unfortunate that in the last censuses most of our people did not return the name of the ‘community’ and ‘language’ and ‘mother tongue’ etc to the enumerators correctly. As a result the numbers of population, language etc are not reflected correctly in the census as well as in the records of the Registrar General of India (census).

The census operation process of the Govt. of India has already been initiated for the year 2011. At the beginning house-listing followed by enumeration, which will be started from 1st February 2011 and will be completed by 28th February. This is a very important matter and should be watched very carefully.

The Nikhil Bishnupriya Manipuri Mahasabha the apex body of the Bishnupriya Manipuri community appeal to all to return to the enumerate correctly as mentioned below.

The name of the community --- Bishnupriya Manipuri
The name of the language --- Bishnupriya Manipuri
The name of the mother tongue---Bishnupriya Manipuri .

Thanking you.

Uday Sinha
Secretary General
Nikhil Bishnupriya Manipuri Mahasabha

Escape: A Short Story by Karunamay Sinha

By Karunamay Sinha
Published in The Statesman (August 10, 2003)

SEVERAL times, she counted the amount. A 100-rupee note, four 10-rupee notes, a sparkling new five-rupee coin and a hoard of small coins of varying denominations that made it difficult for her to work out the exact figure. A vague assessment told her that the amount was somewhere around Rs 150. She was well aware that one-third of the amount would be enough to take her to her village. She put the money into one of the two polythene bags where she had already stashed her clothes, some toys for herself and her brother and an abandoned slicer she thought would do fine in her mother’s kitchen. Once again, she held her breath, anxious to ensure that nobody was awake. Continue...

The ghat of the tank was desolate. Yamuna had almost finished with her ablutions and was straightening the clinging wet clothes when she saw Mukunda coming towards the ghat in a brisk walk, an absorbed look about him — perhaps meant to add to his cultivated air of self-importance. “Tiger-eaten one!” she muttered under her breath as she scurried about to be off before the unpropitious being arrived there. But a freakful idea suddenly flashed into her mind. What if she played a different trick on the devil? A titillating one? Continue...

Lost Cause: A Short Story by Karunamay Sinha

Lost Cause
Short Story
Published in The Statesman (October 25, 2005)

By Karunamay Sinha

IT turned out to be a dingy slum on the outskirts of the township, marked by snotty children scampering about and ragged, shabbily-clad women yelling at the top of their voices. The shack they were led to was locked from outside. “Subi Auntie no longer lives here,” the neighbours informed them. “She lives with her daughter at Silaghat, only her son lives here in this house.” “Where could he be found?” “Oh, Bittu? He should be at the auto stand now, he drives an autorickshaw and leaves home early.” They turned round and hotfooted it to the auto stand of the little township. Fortunately for them he was there, just back from the station, collecting fare from passengers alighting from his vehicle and giving them change. They swooped in on him. “Subi Auntie?” he exclaimed with a note of disdain, “Why, I’ve got no business with that slut!” Continue reading...

Extending Web Border

By RK Rishikesh Sinha, New Delhi

The launch of Google’s Buzz in the first week of February had an earth-shaking impact on the Internet landscape. I grouped with those million of users who were against it, initially due to the privacy concern. My immediate concern was that all the people in my contact list in Gmail were coming to know multiple web profiles I am having. It is something – my previous editor who is not related to is coming to know all my multiple web [Picasa, You Tube, Google Reader, twitter, Flickr..] services owned by me. It was complete noise, communication bombardment, criss-cross messaging upon me.

But the crisis came as a blessing in disguise. I had to tweak many things; and the tweaking process landed me to a serendipitous discovery: There were readers in Facebook, the world’s largest social network, who liked I was able to show and market the Facebook users the content created here.

You can see from the above figure, that all the traffic sources that got in the period January 31–March 2, 2010, first is Google [readers use Google search and than drop to the site]; second is direct [that is people write directly the site’s name]; third is Facebook, the latest discovery. It contributed 11.78 per cent to the total sources landing to the site.

It is not that the idea didn’t strike me before to make the compatible to the Facebook. But I dropped it (mistake on my part) since I thought it useless to join the two – and Facebook.

Now, when Facebook has been connected, how twitter could remain untouched? Now twitter users can remain in contact with the site.

Orkut is in radar, but the Google product long back silently dropped feeds from blog(s) and sites. Waiting when Google allows feeds in Orkut.
