The 'Star' Krishankant Sinha of Space City Sigma

By RK Rishikesh Sinha, New Delhi

It is a myth that the all-knowing Internet knows everything. One such myth relates to old television stuff aired on Doordarshan before 1990.

Search in Google “Space City Sigma”, the search engine would throw up reminiscent results from the people who still long for those days. Those days were really golden days.

Krishankant Sinha in the role of Captain Tara in Space City Singma

For those who have watched Doordarshan some 15 to 20 years back, am sure they will have nostalgic memories of it.

The days when possessing a now ubiquitous looking television set was a luxury. It was a neighbour’s envy product. It was a visual product to showoff, to flaunt that we have a television set. Those were the days when black and white, locked television was rarely found in homes.

The days became immortal for teleserials like Ramayana, Mahabharata, Swami’s Malgudi Days (Ta-Na-Na-Na…), Ek-Do-Teen-Char (Title song: Ek do teen char, chaaro mil ke saath chale to karde chamatkar), Wednesday 8 o’clock Chitraahar, ghost story Vikram Betal, Appu Aur Pappu (Appu aur pappu ki dekho yaari…) Aa Bail Mujhe Maar…and a lot more.

Among these bunch of television programmes, one which had its indelible impact on children was the first Indian science fiction serial the “Space City Sigma”. Year 1986!

Now after more than two decades, our memories have started fading, everything relating to those days is giving a fuzzy image, and in this course, once a hit character of Space City Sigma, Captain Tara, is also being forgotten.

Children of today cannot imagine those days and the craze for the serial Space City Sigma. They will not understand people’s love for this handsome actor, Krishankant Sinha.

Very few people know the actor Krishankant Sinha, who played the memorable lead role of Captain Tara. It is regrettable that the actor had not been properly acknowledged by the new media i.e Internet.

Do you remember Space City Sigma and Captain Tara?

Thanks for posting this article. I am 81 born and was quite young at that time, but I still have fuzzy memories of "space city sigma" and "Captain tara" which was a must watch. After this show as far as I remember I have not seen anything on Indian TV (or so to say even bollywood movies) that would apeal to science fiction lovers. Yes, there was Captain Vyom, but despite of the enhanced computer graphics it did not match the apeal of Captain Tara.

  16. Hey man u r right!!!
I still remember those childhood days. I faintly remember the plot and characters, but had never forget Capt. Tara. The "Sigma" TV series was my favourite and really miss those golden days. And its been really unfair by media to overshadow such a great and handsome actor like Krishankant Sinha aka Capt.Tara.
It's been years and years i have tried to find DVDs or VideoCDs or VHS tapes of the series, but never succeeded.:(
Hey man! If you have any idea about from where to get the series than it would be of great help to me.(My mail id:dhruvgamit@gmail.com)

  19. I Bet that the Doordarshan or Any other channel of India could be so finest in efforts as they have taken in producing the serial. Please do remember the starting of artificial intelligence in that era with the introduction of the 'Shakti' the man whose half is a machine. The serial had the mystic valor of Indian brain power and the true scientific view. After all they have created a masterpiece in that time. But, alas, the government cannot comprehend the meaning of the culture or such things. It will do the things which are entirely the resultant of the whims of their stringent officers or if their empty mind allow them to do something. Now a days, Doordarshan has become a nasty nuisance in terms of ......

The search engine has been launched to get results exclusively on queries and information related to Assam. 'Bisarok', means 'to search' in Assamese language, has been launched and has been linked to various websites of the Government of Assam and departments, educational institutions and media. The search engine is likely to give a new online experience related to searches on Assam. Built on Google custom search engine, the search engine would be collating and building a database of web properties exclusively of the state in the North East region. 'Bisarok' has been developed by RK Rishikesh Sinha, who had earlier created a similar custom search engine ('Bisarei') on Bishnupriya Manipuri.
