Memoir of a fauji uncle

Personal Jottings By RK Rishikesh Sinha An Indian Border Security Force (BSF) soldier Image: Jaipal Coming to our home daily and narrating interesting stories of his life experiences to us, made my memory laden with knowledge of socio-geo-political scenario of his times and I feel today, those ‘stories’ were the first lessons in the field of history, geography, political science and international relations for me. I was at the beginning of my teenage when he started visiting our home in Kashmir. Today, if someone comes daily, it might be taken as harassment and intrusion to ones daily life and wastage of time. But those days and time was different. People were more social and guests would be welcomed heartily. Treating guests with hospitality was the daily ritual that people would love to follow. He was a Bishnupriya Manipuri hailed from Rajagaon, Patharkandi (Assam, INDIA). He was a siphahi in BSF. Though he couldn’t get promotion as he told us with great amusement, “my servic...

Indira, India honoured

By RK Rishikesh Sinha Indira Gandhi A new chapter has been added to the Indo-Bangla relationship on July 25. Bangladesh conferred Bangladesh Swadhinata Sammanona on Indira Gandhi posthumously for her “outstanding contribution” to the country's independence from Pakistan. Though belatedly, the present government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, has taken a historic step by recognizing India’s role in the formation of Bangladesh. The then Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi’s personal and political role to help millions of fleeing Bangladeshi people by opening Indian borders, providing economic aid and shelter, besides sending army to fight against Pakistani army, and finally giving a nation-statehood status to Bangladesh in the world map, is undeniable. However, during the period of 40-year of Independence of Bangladesh, its successive governments have done “calculative distortions …[of] India's role in the war … and [made] Indira Gandhi… the main villain. [Haroon H...

Saare Jahan Se Acha Hindustan hamara

By RK Rishikesh Sinha, New Delhi Students of Kendriya Vidyalayas, the largest system of Central government schools in India , which serve children of Defence Personnel, share something common in their experiences of school days. About the school:  A Central School or Kendriya Vidyalaya, has always a vibrant and invigorated environment with frequent transfer of students. The most distinct feature that characterizes a central school is its creating a mini-India in the school. KV Students are mostly the children of personnel under different armed forces posted out to different parts of India . They speak different mother tongues, born and brought up in different localities, defence campuses, and bring with them traits of all these specialties. A student who has studied in different Kendriya Vidyalayas located in different regions of India could hardly remember all the friends’ name who had once shared his bench, and classroom in his schooldays. It is often seen one-third ...

ZINDAGI LIVE

Personal Jottings By Sonika Rajkumari, New Delhi I do not know how to start. I have never been so confused while writing like I m today. Whatever is running into my mind I am just writing it down. I know this is not the way to write something formally. We often say “I am not lucky” or “I am happy.” What does lucky or unlucky mean? What are the criteria that decide someone is lucky or unlucky? Or are we lucky and content? Very confusing, even I am confused I know so you are. Nevertheless, if we look into others life personally then this confusion would go away within a second. I had visited a place and met a 29-year-old woman that made me think all this. Since the day I came home from hostel, I didn’t go out from my home. So, the day before yesterday i.e. on 16th I had been to my brother’s friend house, she lives in Dwarka Sector 22, Delhi. As usually, that day also I was in happy happy mood. Her husband welcomed and took us to her bedroom. We sat near by her. My brother introdu...

Lousy Critics: Please stand up!

KALEIDOSCOPE By Prabal Atreya, Bangalore Austerity. Rahul Gandhi. Shatabdi Express. SM Krishna. Shashi Tharoor. Five-Star facilities closed. Pranab Mukherjee. Shashi Tharoor again. Twitter. Cattle class. Jayanthi Natarajan. Ashok Gehlok. Media. Blogs. Most of us reading this piece would have gone through at least a few of the above mentioned in some way or the other, in the last couple of days. The austerity drive by the government that’s been labeled by the media, so-called intelligentsia, and the learned bloggers all around the country. Can’t blame them, it’s this country which has such a tarnished image about the politicians. Such has been a polit-bureau’s image that the common man does not want to distinguish between the age-old practices and good practices that are on the process. As if Rahul Gandhi and his invisible army of advisers were not aware of the fact that he cannot board a Shatabdi Express every now and then; that this drive could only aggravate his image as a lausy e...

Search Tushar Sinha, the Zee TV Sa-Re-Ga-Ma-Pa singer

Views Where is Tushar Sinha, the Zee TV Sa-Re-Ga-Ma-Pa singer who once rocked the television viewers all over the world with his soulful voice? His elimination from the programme seems has taken such a toll that he is no more visible in the tinsel world of television. His absence from the limelight has been so long that people are now actually asking where he is now. “Such a long bye…now come back,” said Micheal Daglous in a website on September 15, 2009. Micheal Daglous comment in the site reads “Where are you lost?” in the memory of the singer who was in the Rock Gharana of Himesh Reshammiya in the Sa-Re-Ga-Ma-Pa musical programme in 2007. A quick Google search with “Tushar Sinha Sa-Re-Ga-Ma-Pa” throws out 3, 430 results in 0.30 seconds; it is an irony beside the article, which was carried out in the bishnupriyamanipuri.com and the other in the Rediff.com, there are no relevant materials related to the singer. It is no better in the social networking site Orkut. The singer is dead in...

“The world and Internet are hungry”

E-WORLD By RK Rishikesh Sinha, New Delhi Among the many sweet reasons for which Delhi is wooed the world over, the biggest is the array of food delicacies and myriad cuisines that it pans out for food freaks. Whether it is hot sumptuous aalu tikki, lacchedar paratha, butter chicken , or the frosty lassi , to name a few - the city has more to offer than perhaps any other city of the country. Born, brought up and living in Nizamuddin East, a historical residential colony by all standards and a Mecca for Mughlai food-lovers, for Ravi V. Chhabra, it came very natural to delve into the food and beverages sector. He worked for India’s first Alcobev magazine called Ambrosia in 2001 and did many path-breaking stories on Indian government’s vexed excise policy, beer companies and about the alcohol trade. In 2005, he decided to occupy a space in the cloud with the launching of www.fnbworld.com . Ravi V. Chhabra, who has worked with many international national publications as a full-time journa...

Screening at Airport: A ground reality

Views By Rebati Mohan Sinha, Mumbai The treatment meted out to Shah Rukh Khan detained beyond 66 minutes at the US airport is best known to the Airport Authority. These are the security drills that can’t be changed. The point is that every country has its own set of rules. Some are more stringent than the other. Here I would like to say that a visitor always has a choice of his own to go or not to go to a particular place that makes him uncomfortable. The United States is known to be scrupulous while screening of the tourist is concerned, especially after 9/11 attack and we are quite aware of this punishing procedure. All visitors are subjected to rigorous screening; nobody should feel victimized while going through such painful processes (ordeal). Last year, at Singapore Airport I faced several irrelevant questions for carrying a physiotherapy belt made up of cloth pouch having steal strips in it for leg exercise. However, at Mumbai Airport no security personnel had questioned me, eve...

SRK and to all ASIANS

By Prabal Atreya Well…Well…Well. Yet another airport conduct incident. Mr. Shah Rukh Khan being detained in Newark, NJ (USA). The Indian in me got furious for a moment; after all SRK does hold a place in our hearts. And I don’t compare the Badshah with the Shehenshah, both have their own forte. Maybe, as a human, I may tend to do it down the line but surely when SRK turns 60. But that does not mean ‘am putting my CRAZYmeter down for him; for I’ve also grown up with all the Yash Raj banners he was part of, seen the craze in the female fans who came to hold my hands but only to watch SRK do what he does best- Stretch his hands open so wonderfully that almost half the world’s females would get into his already suffocating heart. Sir, you almost made me a pimp then! What more, I tried doing the same magic; and got responses like- Honey! I like the way you are! Liar she was, because I never saw the same craze for me! Nevertheless, on a serious note, over the years, I also developed a fan fo...
