Future Futile

Courtesy: The Assam Tribune, Horizon  26 March 2011 By RK Rishikesh Sinha Japan Disaster 2011 The whole world is shocked watching the level of destruction and devastation that swept Japan in the wake of the recent 8.9 magnitude earthquake followed by tsunami. It reminded us how fragile we human beings are against the power of nature. We saw how nature’s tandav of obliteration went on in Japan. As the tragedy wasn’t enough, the blasting of nuclear reactors, gripped us with the another greatest fear that we all associate with Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and Chernobyl disaster, the radioactivity exposure. However, the tsunami and subsequent blast of nuclear reactors in Japan have given us food of thought to introspect the world we are living. Though we don’t have any control over the earthquakes, we definitely have control over the setting up of nuclear plants and in the use of radioactive materials. The tragedy reminds us lot of other human-creations which have brought havoc to the

Ramdhenu Assamese movie

Personal Jottings By RK Rishikesh Sinha Ramdhenu Assamese movie I wish to express my feelings associated with the Assamese movie Ramdhenu . Don’t get me wrong since writing on the movie it doesn’t mean to discourage cinemagoers to throng Gold Cinema. In contrast, it doesn’t mean a complete silence to be maintained; hitherto it is to bring the Assamese movie Ramdhenu and Assam film industry to a discussion. My close encounter with Assamese entertainment dates back to the year 1997 when I first landed in Guwahati. I was completely alien to the Assamese language; the fear that Assam (read Guwahati) is a terrorist-infested area, which was very natural coming from Kashmir, however soon withered away from my consciousness. Now after a decade when I don’t stay in the city, I feel those study days in Guwahati were indeed Ramdhenu days for me. Ten years down the memory lane, for me Ramdhenu was  Hiya Diya Niya , the much celebrated Assamese movie. We Hindi-speaking students found th

Titabor: Assam CM Tarun Gogoi constituency

A retail store in the Titabor constituency of Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi Definitely being the constituency of Tarun Gogoi, Titabor always remains in news and discussion, and has its own share of hogging limelight. Now when election is round the corner in Assam, it is time to benchmark where your village/ town stand in comparison to Titabor. About the constituency of Assam CM Tarun Gogoi, if you think it is like any other constituency of Assam, regrettably, it is not. What are the benefits people in the constituency are availing? The question is — where your constituency stands? What they got and what you have missed. Roads: This is one of the first development parameter of progress. If your roads in your village/ town are kutcha and in rainy reason give a grave look; time to give a clarion call. One can see roads joining villages in Titabor are concrete under Prime Minister Gram Sadak Yojna. Water: Villagers in Titabor are enjoying supply water. You read it correct, they

Kartik Sena Sinha gets AIUDF ticket

News It is official now that Kartik Sena Sinha will contest from the Patharkandi constituency under the banner of All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) . See below the list of selected AIUDF candidates for the up-coming Assembly Election – 2011 (Phase – I) in Assam to be held on April 4, 2011. Karik Sena Sinha has the full support of the Bishnupriya Manipuri community and other communities that make up the constituency, says Brojo Mohon of Tinokhal village. Unlike 2006 assembly election when Kartik won from the Patharkandi constituency, this election would be tough and the fight would be limited to Congress’s candidate Monilal Gowala and AIUDF’s Kartik Sena Sinha, he asserts. Letting the electorate know about Kartik’s change of party would be tough since campaigning hasn’t yet started, says Brojo. The trump card that would sway people to support Kartik is development that the constituency has witnessed in his five-year tenure. LIST OF AIUDF CANDIDATE Sl. No. Name of LAC Nam

A life devoted to poetry

Courtesy: The Sentinel By Champalal Sinha In the world of present Bishnupriya Manipuri literature, the man who first makes his imprint on our minds and reflects his image in our eyes, and the name that comes first while discussing the literature of the community is poet Brojendra Kumar Sinha. His fault-finders will, however, have a different view. His is a life totally devoted to poetry, and this is his first identity. It’s poet Brojendra Kumar Sinha who first introduced structural aspect, subject matter, mode of expression, appeal, soul (core), rhetoric and the like in a conscious way in Bishnupriya Manipuri literature in order to put it on a par with developed literatures in the world. And he has been successful in his relentless efforts towards that end. His poems have been translated and published in English, Bengali, Assamese, Nepali, Kokborok, Manipuri, Urdu and other languages, and received with applause. Talking straight, he is the architect of modern Bishnupriya Manipuri poe

If Kartik sinks, so will Bishnupriya Manipuris

Reader’s responses to the support of Kartik Sena Sinha have started pouring in. Here is one from Karunamay Sinha . You can also express your support here .  I don't know much about Kartik Sena. But the pain of losing Bimal Sinha, and the reality the Bishnupriya Manipuris are facing in Tripura prompts me to stand in support of Kartik Sena. He may not be genius of Bimal Sinha's stature. But his love for his people hasn't come under question. If Kartik had ditched BJP for the Development Council, we should welcome him. The Development Council is a reality now. What do you think is the role of Mahasabha? I mean how much are they responsible for Kartik Sena’s predicament? Somehow I believe the Mahasabha cannot disown the role it played in defaming Kartik Sena. What a sincere Bishnupriya Manipuri should consider seriously now is the role of Mahasabha vis-a-vis the society's interests. Kartik, I hear, is fighting election with AIUDF ticket. We should all stand in his support

The politicians left in the lurch

Courtesy: The Sentinel Special Correspondent SILCHAR, March 17: Four MLAs of this Barak Valley, Dr Rumi Nath, Kartik Sena Sinha and Shambhu Singh Mala of BJP and Anwarul Haque of AIUDF deserted their parties to get berth in Congress, perhaps to serve the people of their constituencies more effectively, on the eve of the Rajya Sabha polls. They hit the headlines of the media, both print and electronic, and continued to be news makers. Many gossips and gingerly stories were in circulation about possible reasons behind their desertions from lucrative offers and incentives to assured tickets for Assembly elections. While Rumi Nath and Kartik Sena Sinha gloated over their prize bargains of development councils for Nath community and Bishnupriyas, Shambhu Singh Mala and Anwarul Haque could achieve nothing for their tea tribe and minority people whom they represented. Rumi Nath was the luckiest of them for scoring on both the gains of development council and nomination for her last consti

Fate of Patharkandi without Kartik Sena Sinha

News & Views By RK Rishikesh Sinha Kartik Sena Sinha Kartik Sena Sinha, the sitting Patharkandi MLA, has been denied ticket by the major political parties in the ensuing Assam legislative assembly election. The ruling party Congress has chosen Monilal Gowala, and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has fielded Sukhendu Shekhar Dutta, the Trinamool Congress — Rupam Nandi Purkayastha, and the Asom Gana Parishad — Md Mainul Haque. The AIUDF is yet to declare the name for the Patharkandi constituency. What happened really in his five-year tenure as an MLA in the political weather of the Assam state in general and in particular in the Patharkandi constituency, that he has not been handpicked by any party? What is the political arithmetic that decides choosing of candidates from this constituency? Now when Kartik Sena Sinha has been shown the exit door by every party, ultimately who will win from the fray of contestants? Is it the end of Kartik’s political career? Will he contest as a

Why our community always choose hillocks to reside in Guwahati?

By Bijit Sarma, UAE Born and brought up in a hilltop mostly inhabited by Bishnupriya Manipuri and Meitei Manipuri, at Bamunimaidan, Guwahati. I was always haunted by the question why our community always did choose hillocks to reside in Guwahati. After some introspection I zeroed in to the following possible reasons for settling in hillocks though they could have bought land in other plain areas in those days: insecurity to live among other communities to form a village-like atmosphere in the city far away from their own villages to avoid drying up offensively malodorous dry fish in front of other communities to grow Yennam and Fen-kochu in their backyard to build a mandir and maldhep combination for occasional puja and porbo to continue the culture of dola doli to borrow sugar, salt, Amul milk powder and occasional tea leafs from their BM neighbours just to settle in Govt/ Forest land without spending any money to help preserve the language and culture after leaving v

Decry of a woman’s human heart

By Parivita Sinha International Women’s Day was observed few days ago. The whole world celebrated it with all respect and zeal. I must confess I was not very much in its celebration but… yeah, it sounds very inspiring, makes my woman psyche delighted and proud. In my opinion, the day is dedicated to women’s selflessness, compassion and the power that can construct not only a home but also a society and a nation. But here what makes me feel upset! Do every woman really relate to these aspects? Woman is strong, of course without any prejudice, more than man because God has bestowed upon her the power to bear all the pain that nature can give. It is not a eulogy or an exaggeration but it is the truth that even man folk cannot deny. In fact, now woman has become more man than a woman not just in her deeds but also in her psyche. And I think this has made her powerful as well. Her world has become big. She is now in charge of domestic as well as professional front. It is wonderful, isn’t

They have read — Guess Who Is Watching Us? , Bishnupriya Manipuri in the Internet: Past, Present and Future , and The Financial Express highlights contribution of Bishnupriya Manipuri in Wikipedia . This article, exclusively written on the Bishnupriya Manipuri status in the Internet, is a first-of-its kind attempt to take this fact into the traditional media, the print.  To the question — what has been the extent of participation of Indian languages vis-à-vis Northeastern languages in the Wikipedia? Broadly speaking, it could be said that it is woefully under-represented comparing the number of diverse languages that are a part of the Indian identity. In this context, the Bishnupriya Manipuri language contribution to the world’s fifth largest website, the Wikipedia, is worth to mention. Bishnupriya Ma
