Bishnupriya Manipuri Newsmaker (Bangladesh)

It is with great pleasure we bring to you some ...of the brightest potentials in our (Bangladesh) cultural world. It is our (The Daily Star) way of introducing a “new” generation of news makers in the new year. In their own words they express their highlights of the year gone by and share their expectations from the fans.

Jyoti Sinha, actor, Manipuri Theatre

I had spent last year mostly performing in my troupe's monodrama, “Kohe Birangana”. The show has been staged 27 times since its debut in December, 2010. The play has been staged in different districts including Dhaka, Chittagong, Sylhet and Habiganj.

With the government grant, my troupe has produced a Tagore play, “Debotar Grash”. The play premiered on December 29 last year in Dhaka. I had to spend a significant period of time for the rehearsal of the play, where I have been enacting an important role. The play is in Bishnupriya Manipuri language.

Our troupe celebrated its 15th anniversary last year. We produced a collage featuring old plays. I had to play different roles in the collage. The celebration programme was held in Kamolganj and in Dhaka. To celebrate our traditional festival Bishu as well as the Bangla New Year, Manipuri Theatre arranged a colourful programme. I had to play an important role as an organiser.

I wish to share my plans with theatre enthusiasts this year which is mainly to continue on stage performances in our ongoing productions. Moreover, I want to continue my research work on Manipur Rasa Leela that I started last year. In my “Open Letter” I want to add that we will run a camp to collect new members for the troupe. So keep in touch!!

  1. By Ramlal Sinha — At a time when the Bishnupriya Manipuri drama movement, which had reached its peak when actor-director late Ashwini Sinha, late Golapsena Sinha and others of Baromuni (near Kabughanj on the outskirts of Silchar town were seen on the stage, has been gasping for life in India, the movement has been scaling new heights in Bangladesh. Staging of a drama (Kohe Biranga) as many as 27 times since its debut in December 2010 itself is a feat. The shower of elixir by actor Jyoti Sinha's news on the feat of'Kohe Biranaga'in this blog came close on the heels of such a news on 'Debotar Grash'by Manipuri Theatre in Bangladesh. Will the Bishnupriya Manipuri stage (theatre)in India at all rise like a phoenix from the ashes? Shouldn't we take our cue from our Bangladesh brethren?

The 'Star' Krishankant Sinha of Space City Sigma

By RK Rishikesh Sinha, New Delhi It is a myth that the all-knowing Internet knows everything. One such myth relates to old television stuff aired on Doordarshan before 1990. Search in Google “Space City Sigma”, the search engine would throw up reminiscent results from the people who still long for those days. Those days were really golden days. Krishankant Sinha in the role of Captain Tara in Space City Singma For those who have watched Doordarshan some 15 to 20 years back, am sure they will have nostalgic memories of it. The days when possessing a now ubiquitous looking television set was a luxury. It was a neighbour’s envy product. It was a visual product to showoff, to flaunt that we have a television set . Those were the days when black and white, locked television was rarely found in homes. The days became immortal for teleserials like Ramayana, Mahabharata, Swami’s Malgudi Days (Ta-Na-Na-Na…), Ek-Do-Teen-Char (Title song: Ek do teen char, chaaro mil ke saath chale to ...

Bishnupriya Manipuri Development Council: Few Pertinent Questions (Part I)

By Rebati Mohan Sinha On last 25th March 2010 there was an announcement in the floor of the House that the Government of Assam has agreed on principle to form three separate Social Economic Development Councils for Bishnupriya Manipuri, Nath Yugi and Maimal. And now the Cabinet Committee has given its nod. It will be placed in the House (not yet placed) and once it is passed, then a Ministerial Committee would consult the stake holders i.e. these three communities, regarding their aspirations and would send its recommendation accordingly to the Central Government for further action within the next two months. The two months time since been elapsed, even then the bill is yet to show its face in the House. The Ministerial consultation is quite far away. Why am I repeating the same thing now is because of a section of Bishnupriya Manipuri started quarreling for the share of so-called power, from now on, without knowing the outcome of the development which is taking place in the...
