Teachers to stage 501 hours road and rail blockade in Barak Valley next month

By our Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, June 21: The Bishnupriya Manipuri Language Teachers Association has attacked the State Government’s lackadaisical attitude towards the development of the Bishnupriya Manipuri language and the community as a whole. At a joint press conference today in Guwahati by the Bishnupriya Manipuri Language Teachers Association, the Nikhil Bishnupriya Manipuri Students Union and the Bishnupriya Manipuri Gana Sangram Parishad, all the organizations criticized the Government for not paying any heed to their long standing demands.

Bishnupriya Manipuri Language Teachers Association chief advisor Gopidas Sinha said that in 2001, the State Government had appointed 149 Bishnupriya Manipuri language teachers in L.P. schools in Cachar, Karimganj and Hailakandi districts on honorary basis. "We have been demanding that the 149 posts should be regularized but our demand has always fallen into the deaf years of the Government," said Sinha.

Sinha said that on June 5 the Association had staged an indefinite hunger strike infront of the Silchar District Commissioner’s office. The strike was supported by other Bishnupriya Manipuri organizations and that compelled the Government to sit up and take notice. He added that the Asom Education (Elementary) Department Secretary had called the Association for a discussion on June 18 and after the discussion the Sectretary had assured the representatives of the Association that the Asom Education Minister would have a discussion with them soon.

Sinha however claimed that the Government had taken no step to fulfil their demand of regularizing the 149 posts. The Association is therefore left with no other option but to start an agitation against the Government. Sinha said that if within seven days the posts were not regularized, the Association would stage a 501 hours road and rail blockade in Barak Valley next month.

MLA of Patherkandi, Kartik Sen Sinha, while addressing the media persons, lamented the fact that in its two terms, the Gogoi Government had failed to take any step for the development of the Bishnupriya Manipuri language. He added that he would be raising this issue in the Budjet session of the Assembly.

The MLA also said that till some days ago there were differences within the Association. In fact Samarendra Sinha had drifted away from the Association and started a new Bishnupriya Manipuri teachers’ association. But he took the initiative yesterday to resolve the differences between the two groups and unite them." We are a minority community and if we fight amongst ourselves the Government will never take us seriously. Rather we should all unite and raise one voice that will echo in the corridors of power," said Kartik Sen Sinha.

  1. The self styled Chief advisor of B.M Teacher Assn. has clearly stated that 149 language teachers were employed on honorary basis. Here I would like to put forward the meaning of honorary.
    1. Honorary is given for honor only, without the usual requirements
    duties,privileges,emolument etc.
2.Holding an office or title given as an honor without payment.
3.Relying on honor and not legally
    enforeable,as a duty or obligation
4.Honorary is conferred in recognation of service rendered without the prerequisites or obligation..unpaid, voluntary.
Hence,(1)For teachers demand of remuneration, the Govt is not oblized to(2)Guwahati High Court has given clear ruling that the Govt is not bound to regularise these 149 teachers, instead it can give only age relaxation once they(teacher)qualify interviews.
In this case, will it be justified to go for 501 hrs road/rail blockade?
Here, I fail to understand, why did they call off the hunger strike? To meet Ed.Sec.? If the Ed.
Minister not available on 18th June, then why have they agreed to meet Sec.who can not give even a rupee to any body.
Why should student Union people forceably snatch the files/papers
from Sec. of Teacher Assn.Is this the leadership quality shown
in a meeting? BM people have lost faith in such leadership. If they proceed for blockade they may not
have support. They have no fund to mobalise manpower from one place to anotheras a result, they will go for door to door collection without any account given.
The best part to play is constant
    negotiation with the Govt.
People have not forgotten the nightmare of Kolkolighat Rail-blockade,where poor parents lost a
    youthful life of their daughter,
Sudeshna. Those who, called themselves leaders, went under ground, some surrendered
instead of intencifying the movementat that crucial moment. So far there is no FIR lodged against those trigger happy police force.

  2. Dear all–
We all are in one pond, we should not get differentiate ourselves & motive. We should not look what Govt will think. Just we should raise our voice unitedly by all of us—this is the main principle we should maintain. Our brothers/sisters are teaching for those long years without any single Re. –how those people can survive & what would be their mentality, they will never think in +ve way.
So, my earn request to everybody that pls unite together for anything to achive from others.

    “JAI EMA BISHNUPRIYA MANIPURI”.

The search engine has been launched to get results exclusively on queries and information related to Assam. The 'Star' Krishankant Sinha of Space City Sigma

By RK Rishikesh Sinha, New Delhi It is a myth that the all-knowing Internet knows everything. One such myth relates to old television stuff aired on Doordarshan before 1990. Search in Google “Space City Sigma”, the search engine would throw up reminiscent results from the people who still long for those days. Those days were really golden days. Krishankant Sinha in the role of Captain Tara in Space City Singma For those who have watched Doordarshan some 15 to 20 years back, am sure they will have nostalgic memories of it. The days when possessing a now ubiquitous looking television set was a luxury. It was a neighbour’s envy product. It was a visual product to showoff, to flaunt that we have a television set . Those were the days when black and white, locked television was rarely found in homes. The days became immortal for teleserials like Ramayana, Mahabharata, Swami’s Malgudi Days (Ta-Na-Na-Na…), Ek-Do-Teen-Char (Title song: Ek do teen char, chaaro mil ke saath chale to ...
