Over 100 Bishnupriya Manipuri teachers sat on a hunger strike today morning braving rain at the Deputy Commissioner Office, Silchar, said President of Bishnupriya Manipuri Language Teachers Association, Prabir Rajkumar when he was contacted.
At 4 pm, representatives from Bishnupriya Manipuri Students Association, Bishnupriya Manipuri Gana Sangram Parishad and Bishnupriya Manipuri Language Teachers Association held meeting with Gautam Ganguli, Deputy Commissioner, Cachar at his office.
In the meeting, Gautam Ganguli urged the representatives to called off their strike in keeping in view that the budget is going to be tabled soon in the State Assembly. But the offer was rejected, said Prabir Rajkumar.
Unless and until officially any communication is not sent, the hunger strike of the Bishnupriya Manipuri teachers will not be stopped and it will be carried out as usual, said the President of the Bishnupriya Manipuri Language Teachers Association.
The Bishnupriy Manipuri teachers from Cachar, Karimganj and Hailakandi districts of Assam participated in the strike.
The meeting was attended by Prabir Rajkumar of Bishnupriya Manipuri Language Teachers Association, Samir Sinha of Bishnupriya Manipuri Gana Sangram Parishad, and Anil Rajkumar, Bishnupriya Manipuri Students Association.
The 149 Bishnupriya Manipuri Language teachers have not received any remuneration since 2001 from the Government of Assam.
