NBMM appeals for democratic means to achieve community demands

NEWS

The Nikhil Bishnupriya Manipuri Mahasabha (NBMM) has called for democratic movement to achieve the longstanding demands of the community.

The apex-body has demanded appointment of Bishnupriya Manipuri Language teachers as per the Government norms; inclusion of a Bishnupriya Manipuri member in the recently constituted Linguistic Development Board of Assam; introduction of Bishnupriya Manipuri Cultural Programme in AIR & Doordarsan Kendras. It also demanded adding the community name in the Central list of Other Backward Class (OBC) and formation of a Development Council for overall development of the community.

NBMM has condemned the baseless rumour perpetrated by the so-called students’ leaders of fake organizations. It was stated in a joint meeting of the office bearers of the Central committee and Executive meeting of Assam State Committee Mahasabha. The meeting took place at Patherkandi, Karimganj District, Assam on October 25, 2009.

In the meeting, 34 satyagrahis were felicitated by Dr. Debendra Kumar Sinha, President of the Central Committee and by the dignitaries of Mahasabha. It is to be noted that 34-student satyagrahis were brutally injured when the 5th Assam Police Battalions resorted to lathicharge during the 12-hours NH 44 Road blockade at Patherkandi in the year 1995. In the police action, student leader Shalil Sinha succumbed to injury the next day at the Silchar Medical College on December 31, 1995.

The meeting appealed all the office bearers of the Mahasabha to work sincerely to strengthen the apex and the oldest organization of the Bishnupriya Manipuri community. Special emphasis was given on having a permanent fund and carrying out membership drive at the grass root level. It also stressed on the necessity of mass awareness about the Mahasabha to counter the propaganda being spreaded by a section of fake students.

The meeting was presided over by Bhupendra Sinha, President, Assam State Committee. The speakers who spoke on the occasion were Swapan Sinha, General Secretary, NBMM ASC; Dr. Probat Sinha, General Secretary, NBMM; Subash Sarma, President, Sri Sri Radhamadov Sewa Puja Committee; Satyen Sinha, Working President; Nilkanta Sinha, President Tripura State Committee; Anil Sinha (Goutam), Vice President (Diphu); Maipak Sinha, President Protapgorh Anchalic Committee and others.
