Letters to the Editor
(Published in The Assam Tribune, October 12, 2009)
Sir, – The North East is a unique region where many different ethnic groups have gathered at one place, thus making it the most beautiful part of the country. These groups are having their own distinctive languages, customs, and traditions. However, a few of these groups or communities are facing some serious challenges against the way of preserving their distinct identification.
The Bishnupriya Manipuri is one of these communities having their language at stake. A survey, recently conducted among the community population by a website, reveals that the language is in danger. Sixty-three per cent respondents validated this opinion. The State government and the Central government should take necessary steps to preserve the language before it is too late. –Yours etc., RK Rishikesh Sinha
