Guwahati, Mar 25 (PTI) The Assam government's decision to form development councils for three communities ahead of the Rajya Sabha polls has sparked off a controversy.
State minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today announced in the state assembly that the government had decided to form three development councils for Nathjyogi, Bishnupriya Manipuri and the Maimal (Muslim fishermen) communities.
Taking exception to the announcement a day before the Rajya Sabha election, Leader of the Opposition and President of Asom Gana Parishad Chandra Mohan Patowary said this was tantamount to violation of election code of conduct.
The opposition parties, which have put a common candidate, Jayanta Baruah, will approach the Election Commission on the matter, he said.
Reacting to the opposition charges, the ruling Congress said nothing wrong has been done.
"We will like them (Opposition) to approach the EC," Nilomoni Sen Deka, Assam PCC general secretary said.
