Music Passion

Music defines his life. His regular job in a bank even failed to stop him to pursue his long passion: Music.




Gautam Sinha is a well-known name in the classical music field in the northeastern part of India. Despite sharing stage with luminaries like Suman Chattopadhyay, Nachiketa Chakraborty, Runa Laila, Padma Shree Awardee Bhupen Hazarika, Pinaj Masani, Zohra Bai, Nirmal Mishra, Banoshree Sengupta, Indranil Sen, Indrani Sen, Gautam still feel there is more music in him.



So far, he had composed about 250 songs in Bengali, Hindi and Bishnupriya Manipuri languages. Gautam had composed song and gave his voice in four Bishnupriya Manipuri audio cassettes and thirteen Bengali audio cassettes.

Some of his self-composed songs are Zindagi Ek Kiraye Ka Ghar hai (Ghazal), Poonam Ka Chanda (Geet), Kisko Sunaye Apna Fashana(Ghazal), Abb to Tum Bin Raha Nehi Jaye, Sanjh Savere (Geet), Khonke Teri Ankho Ki Kangana (Geet), Rana Ji (Bhajan), Krishna Pyare Ko (Bhajan), Tumi Asho Kache Tai (Bengali Geet), Janom Janome More (Bishnupriya manipuri song in 'Belir Mingal'), Loktake Kader (Bishnupriya manipuri song in ' Belir Mingal'), Supkore Dil Nai (Bishnupriya Manipuri song in 'Michang Manna').

Looking back, Gautam’s journey to music has been purely of passion and an urge to become a successful singer. The inspiration to become a singer came from his father, late Jagat Mohan Singha.

He started learning classical music (vocal) at an early age from well-known classical vocalist Guru Pandit Motilal Singha in the year 1968. He also got lessons on classical vocal and music from Pandit Ajoy Chakraborty, the first recipient of the 'Kumar Gandharva' award, and the first classical vocalist of India who received the President's Award for the best male playback singer.

Finding life was not easy and rosy especially in the field of music. Concerned, his parents, late Jagat Mohan Singha and Chandana Debi, encouraged him to give more importance to the formal education for a better career. Accordingly, he completed his education and also kept his interest of singing growing and alive.

Born on October 31, 1959, Gautam completed B.Sc. from G.C College, Silchar, and vocal training from Sangeet Mahavidyalaya, College Road, Silchar. He was awarded with First Class in Classical Vocal (Nipun) (Master degree) from Lucknow University in 1999, and First Class in Sangeet Probor from Bangiyo Sangeet Parishad, West Bengal in 2002.

He had performed in many programmes as a Ghazal Singer in Doordarshan, Silchar, Doordarshan, Guwahati, PPC (NE) Doordarshan, Guwahati, and All India Radio, Guwahati. He is an approved Ghazal Singer from Delhi Music Board.

His cherishing moments had been singing with Ramkumar Chattopadhya (Thumri toppa) on the same stage and in the Sugam Sangeet programme where he sang Ghazals in the presence of Zohra Bain and Chandan Das.

At the age of 50, Gautam Sinha is indeed a star in the classical music in the northeast of India. Die-hard ghazal enthusiasts, still croon his soulful voice in Zindagi Ek Kiraye Ka Ghar hai and Kisko Sunaye Apna Fashana.

Bishnupriya Manipuri Development Council: Few Pertinent Questions (Part I)

By Rebati Mohan Sinha On last 25th March 2010 there was an announcement in the floor of the House that the Government of Assam has agreed on principle to form three separate Social Economic Development Councils for Bishnupriya Manipuri, Nath Yugi and Maimal. And now the Cabinet Committee has given its nod. It will be placed in the House (not yet placed) and once it is passed, then a Ministerial Committee would consult the stake holders i.e. these three communities, regarding their aspirations and would send its recommendation accordingly to the Central Government for further action within the next two months.
