City`s first Ganesh Utsav was celebrated at Keshavji Naik Chawl,Girgaum near famous sea beach Chowpaty. It is celebrated as the birthday of Lord Ganesha, the elephant headed son of Shiva-Parvati. Every year the Utsav is celebrated for 11 days and this year it will be between 11 and 21st September 2010. However, certain Mandal Committees of Mumbai will take out huge processions on 25th September, called Ganesh Visarjan, the idol immersion also called Dance Ganesh through the streets of Mumbai, chanting of Ganapati Pappa Morya, Pudhachya Varshi Laukar ya, Oh Ganesh my Lord!
There are different versions of the story of his birth. Once Gauri(Parvati) the Shiva`s spouse created a white Ganesha from the dust on her body and asked him to stand on guard while she was taking bath. The obedient Ganesh did not permit Shiva to enter and in the ensuing struggle, Ganesha`s head was chopped off. To appease distraught Gauri, Shiva placed the first head found facing north that happened to be of an elephant.
Shiva declared then and there that Ganesha would be worshipped in the beginning of other worships as he would remove all obstacles. He is specially worshipped as the God of wisdom, prosperity and good fortune.
