Mahasabha thank Gogoi for separate OBC serial number

GUWAHATI, July 2: The Nikhil Bishnupriya Manipuri Mahasabha (NBMM) thanked Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi for the Cabinet decision taken yesterday to give a separate serial number for the Bishnupriya Manipuri community in the OBC list. Talking to this reporter, NBMM secretary general Uday Sinha from Silchar said: “It’s the fulfilment of a long-standing demand of the Bishnupriya Manipuri community. We thank the Chief Minister for this Cabinet decision on issuance of a separate serial number for the Bishnupriya Manipuri community in the OBC list and the recent notification for the setting of a development council for the wellbeing of the community.”

According to Sinha, the Assam Other Backward Classes Commission had issued a corrigendum on March 18, 1996 amending the serial No. 13 of the OBC list through a notification (TAD/OBC/92/94/PT/3) stating that serial number 13 in the OBC list would read as “Manipuri including Bishnupriya Manipuri, Brahmin Manipuri and Manipuri Muslims”. “Against this decision of the Commission dated September 29, 1095, K Kumardhan Singh filed a writ petition before the Gauhati High Court. In its order issued on April 9, 1999, the High Court directed that the Bishnupriya Manipuri should be included in the list of OBC under a separate serial number of the said list for the purpose of reservation in public service in Assam under Article 16 (A) of the Constitution,” Sinha said, and added: “Against this decision of the Gauhati High Court, the State of Manipur and K Kumardhan Singh filed a special leave petition in the Supreme Court that upheld the order of the Gauhati High Court.”
