The comeback of Tushar Sinha

High Fliers

By RK Rishikesh Sinha, New Delhi

His life catapulted suddenly from being a faceless and nameless boy to a heartthrob of millions after he participated in the Zee TV Sa-Re-Ga-Ma-Pa singing programme. Viewers across the world were hooked to their television sets to watch him singing the hit numbers of Hindi songs.

What was his life before appearing in the Sa-Re-Ga-Ma-Pa programme which has the rare distinction of producing singers like Shreya Ghosal, Kunal Ganjawala, and like many talented singers to the movie-crooning nation? He said, “During those days I was singing in local orchestras and someone informed me that Himesh Sir is coming to Guwahati, Assam and will be taking auditions from contestants for the programme”. He went on saying that he had never expected that he would be selected among the thousands of contestants, competing first in Guwahati and then in Kolkata, West Bengal.

Explaining what are the steps or hurdles that he had to cross to appear finally in front of the camera, he said “It was evening; I entered the audition hall after waiting since 3 am in the queue and crossed three rounds. I sang all styles of singing and got selected.”

“The competition was not ended there in Guwahati, we 10-selected singers from northeast, again competed with singers from Kolkata. Two another singers and I from northeast finally got tickets to Mumbai - our final destination.” For Tushar the rest is history.

The singer went on explaining that he was unsatisfied with the songs that were given to him by the creative team of the programme. “Experiences are not so good because I can’t prove myself by singing my own style. The songs given to me were not of my choice and genre,” he confides.

He further adds, “But I am lucky that I was selected in the world top finalist in an international program Sa-Re-Ga-Ma-Pa Vishwayud that gave me an opportunity to say that I am a Bishnupriya Manipuri.”

Absolutely, for Tushar Sinha, who belongs to the Bishnupriya Manipuri community, it was indeed a great moment of his life to reveal in an international platform like Sa-Re-Ga-Ma-Pa about his mother tongue. But destiny played here rude and ultimately got eliminated in the Episode 10 on June 2, 2007 leaving behind the growing fan-following.

Recalling his friends who were with him during his short sojourn to the world of fame, Tushar Sinha says, “I miss Raja Hasan and Amanat Ali very much. Raja used to say that I am a very strong contender to him; and I used to say that he is better singer than me. I am very happy that he went on to become the first runner-up…God bless him with all success in his life.”

Some other moments, the singer still have in his mind, how “Amanat used to like Bihu songs very much which I used to perform in my off-time.” He went on to become the second runner up in the Sa-Re-Ga-Ma-Pa Challenge 2007.

The post-Sa-Re-Ga-Ma-Pa life didn’t turn up as he was expecting. “From a celebrity life in the show, suddenly I found, I was no-where… I was in a crossroad not knowing from where to start my life…”

Tushar Sinha at last took the advice of Charu Hansnayak of Zee TV not to forget one’s State, he came down to Guwahati, Assam, where he found the respect from his own people and gave a new turn to his life and to his career.

“Right now I am doing nice work in Assamese music and also giving a tough fight in Mumbai. My State helped me very much in building my music career. I am proud of my State Assam,” he blurts out.

The singer’s career which got halt has at last started sailing again. “I had signed an Assamese CD movie and an album (Mone Mone Morom) and also singing for coming up Bihu CD movies”. He further adds that he had sung for Bishnupriya Manipuri movies “Paritran” and "Anangsa” and also in the background in the Hindi movie “Lets Dance”.

Asking about his wish, Tushar replies that he wants to entertain the world around with his singing ability and wants to meet his fans. Is he open to perform anywhere in India for his fans, “Definitely, why not, I will come for them, I will perform for them…just I need their wish and a call.”

Unfortunately the journey that Tushar Sinha had traversed attaining the glare of camera has not being appropriately carried forward by his fans and media altogether. Still the star is in ignominy in comparison to his journey-to-stardom partners are concerned. He is still uninformed where the world had left him since the day he left Sa-Re-Ga-Ma-Pa. He still doesn’t know his fan following.

Nevertheless, Tushar Sinha has proved his mettle by making his presence felt in the Assamese regional music industry. For a singer, association with music is itself a grand success. Yet he has a long way to go in his journey to the world of music. The artist has made his comeback with a new name - Tushar Arjun Sinha.

  1. Its very nice to get details about Tushar(Bapon), a small boy whom I met during my college life staying as a tanent in their house at New Bhakatpur. We the Bishnupriya Manipuries should pray to God about his name & fame. Because in our community, one Tushar came once in a blue moon. We should make more singers like Tushar so the existance of Tushar's name & fame is required for further generation. May God bless Tushar.
