Assam Bhawan, Mumbai, is celebrating the birthday of legendary figure of Assamese film industry and Northeastern cultural world, Dr Bhupen Hazarika on September 8, 2009. The event will take place at Assam Bhawan, Vashi, Navi Mumbai from 7.00pm to 9.00pm.

Dr. Bhupen Hazarika is one of the well renowned and versatile music composers and film makers of Indian cinema. He is regarded as the pioneer who brought Assamese cinema in the global arena.

He is conferred with many prestigious national and international awards. In 1977, he won the Padamshree for his outstanding contribution to the field of culture in India. In 1979, he won the All India Critic Association Award for the best performing folk artist in India. Sangeet Natak Academy, New Delhi awarded him in 1987 for his outstanding contribution towards Indian music. Not only this, in 2001, he was honoured with Padma Bhusan, one of the highest civilian award by the Government of India. He was given the Lata Mangeshkar Award for his overall contribution in music by the Madhya Pradesh Government. In 1993, he was honoured with India’s highest title for cinema, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award. In the same year, an international award was bestowed upon him for the film Rudaali at the Asia Pacific International Film Festival in Japan.

The Assam Association, Mumbai and Shreemoyee Mahila Samity will be contributing in organizing the event.

    Bishnupriya Manipuri Development Council: Few Pertinent Questions (Part I)

    By Rebati Mohan Sinha On last 25th March 2010 there was an announcement in the floor of the House that the Government of Assam has agreed on principle to form three separate Social Economic Development Councils for Bishnupriya Manipuri, Nath Yugi and Maimal. And now the Cabinet Committee has given its nod. It will be placed in the House (not yet placed) and once it is passed, then a Ministerial Committee would consult the stake holders i.e. these three communities, regarding their aspirations and would send its recommendation accordingly to the Central Government for further action within the next two months.
