Let’s all come together and let everyone else know about the Lokeis we belong, at the end of the week we would collate how many Lokeis exist. So go, ask, research, dig up stories that give your Lokei that special name, we would know how many different flowers make this garland called “Bishnupriya Manipuri”. An Appeal for census of Bishnupriya Manipuri: Mahasabha

It is known to all that the Government of India conducts the ten yearly General Census of the population of India. The census of India will determine various factors like numbers of people speaking different languages, castes, communities, religions, mother tongues of people, education and literacy, marital status, economic conditions, numbers of male and females besides the total number of population. So the preservation of identities of the indigenous people, their languages and culture would largely depend on this census. As regards our community Bishnupriya Manipuri, it is unfortunate that in the last censuses most of our people did not return the name of the ‘community’ and ‘language’ and ‘mother tongue’ etc to the enumerators correctly. As a result the numbers of population, language etc are not reflected correctly in the census as well as in the records of the Registrar General of India (census). The census operation process of the Govt. of India has already been initiated for

Escape: A Short Story by Karunamay Sinha

Escape By Karunamay Sinha Published in The Statesman (August 10, 2003) SEVERAL times, she counted the amount. A 100-rupee note, four 10-rupee notes, a sparkling new five-rupee coin and a hoard of small coins of varying denominations that made it difficult for her to work out the exact figure. A vague assessment told her that the amount was somewhere around Rs 150. She was well aware that one-third of the amount would be enough to take her to her village. She put the money into one of the two polythene bags where she had already stashed her clothes, some toys for herself and her brother and an abandoned slicer she thought would do fine in her mother’s kitchen. Once again, she held her breath, anxious to ensure that nobody was awake. Continue ... Email Alerts Jobs and Career Get Posts, Videos, Photos in Email

An Unfair Deal By Karunamay Sinha Published in The Statesman (September 13, 2004) The ghat of the tank was desolate. Yamuna had almost finished with her ablutions and was straightening the clinging wet clothes when she saw Mukunda coming towards the ghat in a brisk walk, an absorbed look about him — perhaps meant to add to his cultivated air of self-importance. “Tiger-eaten one!” she muttered under her breath as she scurried about to be off before the unpropitious being arrived there. But a freakful idea suddenly flashed into her mind. What if she played a different trick on the devil? A titillating one? Continue ... Email Alerts Jobs and Career Get Posts, Videos, Photos in Email

Lost Cause: A Short Story by Karunamay Sinha

Lost Cause Short Story Published in The Statesman (October 25, 2005) By Karunamay Sinha IT turned out to be a dingy slum on the outskirts of the township, marked by snotty children scampering about and ragged, shabbily-clad women yelling at the top of their voices. The shack they were led to was locked from outside. “Subi Auntie no longer lives here,” the neighbours informed them. “She lives with her daughter at Silaghat, only her son lives here in this house.” “Where could he be found?” “Oh, Bittu? He should be at the auto stand now, he drives an autorickshaw and leaves home early.” They turned round and hotfooted it to the auto stand of the little township. Fortunately for them he was there, just back from the station, collecting fare from passengers alighting from his vehicle and giving them change. They swooped in on him. “Subi Auntie?” he exclaimed with a note of disdain, “Why, I’ve got no business with that slut!” Continue reading ... Email Alerts Jobs and Career Get Posts,
