Bishnupriya Manipuri language needs rigorous, divergent scientific study
to improve our understanding towards it. As a matter of fact, to this
little-known language, a computional study which is a first-of-its-kind scientific
approach thus exploring the language has been made in a paper pubished by Nayan
Jyoti Kalita, Navanath Saharia, and Smriti Kumar Sinha, Department of Computer
Science and Engineering, Tezpur University.
The paper titled ‘Towards the development of a Bishnupriya
Manipuri Corpus’, the team has developed a ‘corpus’ of approximately 1 lakh
Bishnupriya Manipuri words and 10, 196 sentences. A corpus is a building block
upon which a researcher make computional processing of a language. However, morphological
and etymological study has been done by Dr. K.P Sinha. The first of its kind in
the direction of computational liguistic perspective to the Bishnupriya
Manipuri language, the paper highlights an interesting morphological feature
with word formation of the language from the Tibeto-Burman Meitei roots.
