Kalkalight Railway Station May Be Renamed Sudeshna Railway Station

If it goes right, the Kalkalighat Railway Station, at Patharkandi, Assam may be renamed to Sudeshna Railway Station, a memorandum after being cleared from the Indian Railway Board has been put forward to the Ministry of Railways for consideration to change the name.

On 16th of June 2008, the Sammilita Sanskritik Mancha, Silchar organized a program at Silchar Railway station, to welcome Sri Basudev Acharya, Hon'ble Chairman, Indian Railway Board Standing Committee, and submitted a memorandum to change the name of the Silchar Railway Station to Bhasha Swahid Station, Silchar.

In the same program, the Nikhil Bishnupriya Manipuri Mahila Organization (NBMMO), Silchar also submitted a memorandum to Sri Acharya, with the demand of the change of name of Kalkalighat Railway Station to Sudeshna Railway Station and for the allotment of a piece of land at the station premise for erection of an alter in the memory of martyr "Sudeshna" in the honour of supreme sacrifice made by her for the cause of our mother tongue, the Bishnupriya Manipuri.

Sri Acharya received the memorandum with utmost honour and assured to forward the same to Railway Minister Sri Lalu Prasad Yadav and do the needful. Later, in his reply to the NBMMO, it mentioned that the same has been forwarded to the Hon'ble Railway Minister for its consideration.

It is interesting to see, how things turns up in the Ministry of Railways. But, it is an initiative that has crossed one hurdle and expected to see lot more.

    Renaming of the Rly.Stn as Sudeshna
    would be an achievement for the language movement of B.M. We are anxiously waiting for the D day.

    Hmmm.. that will be a great step by the railway committee….bcoz after changing or renaming the railway station’s name it will be helpful to you all… So I would like to congratulate you all…..

    It is really a good news for me as I belong to same area. Our native high school is also situated at Kalkalighat and our nearest railway station is Kalkalighat.

    If this effort bears fruit, I will be the first person to celebrate the occasion.
